  • NIMH: Implicit theories as moderators of the link between conflict and relational quality.
  • UH Program to Enhance External Funding: Partner idealization and reactions to conflict: The role of relationship beliefs.
  • UH Research Initiation Grant: Implicit theories of relationships: Effects on satisfaction, longevity, and interracial relationships.


Research Interests
  • How individuals' "implicit theories" of relationships influence how they perceive, initiate, and maintain romantic relationships.
  • How motivational orientations influence interpersonal defensiveness and health-related behavior, including self-serving bias, self-handicapping, defensive coping, binge drinking, driving anger, and resistance to persuasion.
  • How having one's self-esteem contingent upon one's relationship increases the impact of relationship outcomes on the self.
