Family Transition Solutions

The staff at UH-CFP has developed an innovative new treatment program designed to address the specific needs of adults and children involved in contested divorces. This program, entitled Family Transition Solutions (FTS), was developed in association with Children's Legal Services of Houston and with the assistance of a grant from the American Bar Association.

FTS is designed to address the needs of children involved in contentious family transitions through their participation in an 8-week child treatment group. Additionally, parents will participate in a concurrent 8-week treatment group that parallels the child program in content and technique, emphasizing knowledge and skills to facilitate their child’s adaptive adjustment during family transition.  A condensed version of the program has also been developed that covers the same content as the 8-week treatment, but is conducted in four 2-hour Saturday sessions.

Requirements:

This program will be offered to English-speaking families who are currently in the divorce process or have been divorced within the last year with children in 1st – 5th grades. Referral procedures have also been developed for children who do not meet inclusion criteria for the program or who are in need of more individualized treatment. Parents of children younger than 1st grade are also welcome to attend the parent component of the program.

Primary Goals:
  • Improve child adjustment during family transitions through psychoeducation, skill development, and specialized therapeutic interventions.

  • Reduce conflict between parents through psychoeducation, skill development, and specialized therapeutic interventions.

  • Identification of families or individuals in need of more individualized interventions and referral to appropriate resources.

  • Evaluation of program effectiveness to allow for continued program development.

Please contact UH-CFP for for information about this program and program fees.
